Aligarh District in
Uttar Pradesh spreads over an area of 3700 sq km. The population of the district is about 3 million.
The summer months April to June are very hot and dry, with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C. The winter months October to February are cool with temperatures falling as low as 2 to 3°C. Rainfall is scanty. The best time to visit is from October to March, though temperatures may dip considerably during December-January.
The economy mainly depends on the various large and small scale industries, spread over the district. Aligarh possesses an important position in the industrial map of India and it is known as 'Tala Nagri' (the land of locks) since it is famous for manufacturing different types of locks. Locks and hardware industries are the main industries of Aligarh.
A kind of patchwork embroidery (patti ka kaam) and gajak, a sweet made of jaggery and sesame seed are unique to Aligarh. Purdil Nagar and
Khurja are towns noted for their glass beads and ceramics respectively.
Aligarh Muslim University is situated here.
