Chauri Chaura in
Gorakhpur District of
Uttar Pradesh is associated with the freedom movement of the country. It is around 25 km south-east of
Gorakhpur.
Fed up with the repressive policies of the British, the villagers burned down a police station in 1922. This was in retaliation to the police firing on a procession of satyagrahis in Chauri Chaura. In this incident around 22 policemen were killed and Gandhiji immediately called of the non-cooperation movement. This action of Gandhiji is still debated.
Chauri Chaura Railway Station is on the Gorakhpur – Bhatni rail route.
