Moradabad District lies on the western side of
Uttar Pradesh. In 1624, Rustom Khan, the governor of Sambhal captured
Moradabad city and set up a fort at this place. Earlier this place was known as Rustom Nagar and later renamed as Moradabad after
Shah Jahan's son Murad Bux. At present, Moradabad District has an area of 5,967 sq km with a population over 3.7 million.
Ramganga and
Ganges are the major rivers.
Moradabad has an agro based economy. Paddy, wheat, sugar cane, and mustard are the major crops. There are a number of agro-based industries throughout the district. But the economy of the Moradabad depends mostly on small scale industries, commerce, and trade. It is also famous for its handicrafts, and artistic brass products and horn / bone handicraft since ancient times.
