Built by
Emperor Akbar in 1583 AD, Allahabad Fort is a rare example of medieval Indian art, architecture and craftsmanship. It is positioned on the banks of the
Yamuna River, near the
Triveni Sangam, in
Allahabad. On realizing its strategic location, the British based a munition depot and military contingent here.
The largest of Akbar's forts, it boasts huge walls and three gateways lined by high towers. Found inside the fort are Saraswati Kup (a well), Patalpuri Temple and the much revered Akshaya Vat or immortal banyan tree. Ashoka Pillar, carrying some edicts and a Persian inscription of Emperor Jahangir, are the other highlights.
Presently, this fort is under the control of army, and only a limited area is open to the visitors. Prior permission is required to enter this fort.
