Kumbhabhishekam is sacred ceremony for sanctifying a newly constructed temple. It involves a series of rites and rituals performed to make the temple holy.
After the idol of the deity is placed in the sanctum, a ‘kalasam’ (bronze urn) filled with water is placed on the top of the temple tower. A special ‘puja’ is performed for imparting holy characteristics to the water held inside the vessel.
On completion of Kumbhabhishekam the temple is termed as holy. It is now said to be ready to function as a channel of communication between the devotee and the divine lord.
