Pulicat Sanctuary




Started in 1976, Pulicat Sanctuary is positioned in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. Occupying an area of 500,000 hectares, the sanctuary is covered with open shrubs and tidal forests. Avi fauna includes flamingoes, pelicans, ducks, teals, storks, terns, herons, gulls and waders. Prawn, plankton, mollusks and fishes of about 65 different species such as sable fish, sargin fish, white, black, and silver promphets are the common invertebrates found in the sanctuary. It is home to a variety of reptiles such as monitor lizard, other lizards, and poisonous snakes such as the spectacled cobra, Russel’s viper, and krait. The best time to visit this sanctuary is from October to March. It is well connected by a network of road and rail.
