Tuticorin District is bordered by
Virudhunagar and
Ramanathapuram districts in the north,
Tirunelveli District in the west and south-west and the
Gulf of Mannar in the east and south-east. It covers an area of 4,621 sq km and has a population of over 4.2 million.
Tuticorin, also known as Thoothukudi, is one of the Port cities in South India. It is situated in the south-eastern part of
Tamil Nadu.
Tuticorin District is a major industrial and commercial center and harbour. The harbour is well known as pearl fishing and salt production center. Tuticorin is also called as ‘Muthu Nagar’ (Pearl City). Agriculture is the main occupation in the area. It has more than 0.1 million of cultivable land. Paddy, corn, ragi, cottons and groundnut are the main crops.
Thiruchendur subramania swami temple, Panchalankurichi palace, Vanchi Maniyachi, Ottapidaram,
Ettayapuram and Korkai (ancient port of the Pandyas) are the major tourist attractions.
