With an area of 2,100 sq km, Tiruvarur District has a population of over 1.1 million.
Tamil,
Telugu,
Malayalam and
Urdu are the languages spoken. The temperature varies from 22° C to 40° C. It receives an average rainfall of 300 mm towards south-west and 700 mm towards north-east.
Agriculture is one of the main occupations. The total cultivable area is 257,700 hectare. Rice, sugarcane, groundnut, coconut and gingelly are the major crops. Tiruvarur District is famous for industries. Pamani Fertilizers, Mannargudi Kunniyur Paper board Mill, Mannargudi Chandramohan Ceramics and Mannargudi Modern Rice Mills are some of them.
Tiruvarur is one of the important pilgrimage sites in
Tamil Nadu. Thyagaraja swami Temple is the major tourist spot. It is the biggest chariot temple in Tamil Nadu. Tiruvarur is the birth place of Sri Thyagaraja, one of the musical trinity of south India. The Mannargudi Rajagopalaswamy temple is another testimony to the fact that Tamil Nadu is the foundation for all artistic works. Mannargudi temple was built in 1072 AD and the construction was completed after 50 years in 1122 AD.
