Thappu is a percussion instrument mostly used in
Kerala and
Tamil Nadu. This instrument produces a sound like that of
Chenda.
It is a circular drum with one end tightened with the leather of buffalo or cow. The circular wood is carved out of jackfruit tree trunk. Before playing, the instrument is placed above the flame of fire to tighten the membrane.
Thappu accompanies the art forms such as Padayani, Velakali and Thukkam in Kerala.
