Jamadagni was a 'warrior-brahmin' and a descendant of Sage Bhirgu. He was the son of Richika and Satyavati. According to
the Mahabharata, Jamadagni was a master of all the
Vedas. He married Renuka, daughter of King Presenajit, of the Solar Dynasty. They had five sons, Rumanwat, Sushena, Vasu, Viswavasu and
Parashuram. Jamadagni was one of the seven celestial sages or the
Saptarshis.
Rishi Jamdagni Temple - a shrine dedicated to Jamadagni - is situated near the
Yamuna River at
Than Village of
Uttarkashi District. There's a sacred site at
Jaunpur -
Jamdagni Ashram - believed to be the hermitage of the sage.
