Sivagangai, the headquarters of the
Sivagangai District in
Tamil Nadu, is 64 km east of
Madurai. Steeped in history, it was under the
Chola Dynasty from 10th to 13th century.
The Collectorate and main offices are housed in the Civil Station. Sivagangai is home to many industries and Sakthi Sugars is prominent among them. The chief wholesale trading center, Karaikudi, is a nearby attraction.
The nearest airport is at Madurai. Sivagangai Railway Station is on the
Manamadurai-Karaikudi line and is 2 km from the town bus station. Sivagangai is on the state highway and is connected to important towns in Tamil Nadu by road.
