Periyar University was established in 1997, on the 119 th birth anniversary of the great rationalist, Periyar E V Ramasamy, by the enactment of Periyar University Act in
Salem,
Tamil Nadu. The prime objective is to provide quality education to all sections of the society. It offers under graduate and post graduate courses in arts, science, engineering and technology. Research programs are also conducted. The university has 55 affiliated colleges including government, government aided and self financing colleges. Besides academic programs, the university also encourages co-curricular activities. Hostel and residential quarters are also available. Periyar University also provides distant education programs.
