Thakkolam is located in
Vellore District and lies on the Arakkonam -Perambakkam road. The ancient name of this place was Thiruvooral. Thakkolam is around 20 km south of
Arakkonam.
It is said that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu did penance to get a darshan of Lord Shiva at this place. Thus Thiruvooral came to be known as Thavakkolam, and was later called Thakkolam. The region contains two temples - one in the northern part known by the name Gangadeeswarar temple and the other is the Umapatheeswarar temple in the south.
Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport. Takkolam Railway Station is on the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu rail route.
