Nagore Dargah

Nagore Dargah is the shrine dedicated to Meeran Sahib Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid Badshah. One of the popular pilgrimage centers for Muslims in Tamil Nadu, the Dargah has beautiful domed arches and lovely minarets. The Dargah is standing proof of the harmonious co-existence of Hindu - Muslim communities. The Nagore Dargah shrines are situated at three locations, Nagore, Vanjur and Silladi. The main campus at Nagore is enclosed by a compound wall, with four entrances, one each on the north, south, east and west. The large tower called 'Periya Minara' stands at a height of 131 ft.

There is a golden dome building which houses three tombs in three separate chambers, the doors of which are made of silver. The mortal remains of Meeran Sahib, his son Syed Mohammed Yusuf and his daughter-in-law Saeeda Sultana Biwi are buried in the tombs.

A golden box is placed to the side of Meeran Sahib, which contains a pair of wooden slippers believed to have been used by Meeran Sahib. The 'Peer Mandap' is seen near the golden dome building. It is the place where the 'Peer of the Dargah' stays fasting for three days during the festive season of the Dargah.

Vanjur Shrine is situated about 2 km north from the main campus. Here, Meeran Sahib stayed in meditation for 40 days inside an underground cave. Hindu influence is remarkably seen in both Nagore architecture and rituals.

Kanthuri Festival (Kanthuri Urs) is the festive season observed during the lunar month of Jumada al-Thani.

The nearest airport is at Trichy which is about 150 km and the nearest railway station is at Nagapattinam which is about 4 km from the Dargah. Buses ply to Nagore from Nagapattinam, Karaikal,Thanjavur, Chennai, and other neighbouring cities and towns.
