Saccidananda Ashram

Shantivanam

Saccidananda Ashram is situated at Kulittalai in Karur District. Founded by the French priests, Fr. Jules Monchanin and Fr. Henri Le Saux, in 1950, the ashram of the trinity gives the idea about the monastic values of the Benedictine tradition. The priests are also known by their Indian names Swami Parama Aruby Ananda (Fr. Jules Monchanin) and Swami Abhishiktananda (Fr. Henri Le Saux).

The name of the ashram was derived from the words sat-cit-ananda. These three Indian terms have specific meanings. Sat means existence; cit means awareness or intelligence; and ananda means bliss or love. The ashram also holds a church built in the model of traditional South Indian style temples.
