Kovilpatti is located at a distance of 90 km south of
Madurai City. It is the gateway to
Tirunelveli and
Tuticorin District. Kovilpatti has an area of 12.58 sq km with a population of around 87000.
Due to the availability of black-cotton soil, cotton cultivation is the major agricultural activity in Kovilpatti. Match factories, textile mills, and fireworks are the other major industries. The two major textile units are the Loyal Textiles and Lakshmi Mills.
The town has the famous temple of Shenbagavalli Amman at the backside of Gandhi Stadium. Arun Anit Shelters Childrens Park, Ramdoss Park and Municipal Park are minor centers for recreation at Kovilpatti.
The nearest air link is Madurai. Kovilpatti is well connected by rail network. There are regular bus services between
Kanyakumari and Madurai, which passes through Kovilpatti.
