Colachel Port is situated in the latitude 8 degree 10' N and longitude 77 degree 14' E, in
. This natural port is sheltered on all sides by chain of rocks and the Muttom point. It seems like a bay and steamers of about 10,000 to 15,000 tons can anchor at this port. As the port is an open roadstead port, there are no berthing facilities for mooring steamers.
The port has the facilities of a jetty, wharves and lighters. Other navigational aspects are port light, anchorage light, beacon, port signal station and a flag mast for flag signaling. Mandaikadu, famous for the Bhagavathy Amman Temple, lies northeast of Colachel Port.
The port operates from 06:00 to 18.00 hrs.
