Keerapalayam Village, a model village, is situated near
Chidambaram on the
National Highway 45 in
Cuddalore District of
Tamil Nadu. This ancient village lies on the banks of Vellar River, a seasonal river formed by the intersection of Vasishta Nadi and Sweta Nadi. It is believed that during the ancient period, Vellar River separated the
Chola and
Pallava kingdoms and the Keerapalayam village had become a cross mark between the two kingdoms. In Tamil, the divider or cross mark between two rivers is called 'Keeral' and 'Palayam' specifies 'habitation.'
This village is said to be the model village because of its innovational efforts in the fields of group activities, cleanliness, greening up activities and public participation.
Railhead close to the city is Chidambaram Railway Station.
