Ranipet is located on the banks of
Palar River in
Vellore District. The name Ranipet was given by the British in memory of King Thaesinghu Rajan’s wife who committed
sati in the battle field. Ranipet is 27 km from Vellore.
Also known as Hasnalipet, the town is steeped in history. The second railway line in India was laid in 1889 between Chennai and Ranipet. The famous Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore started its function first by the name Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet.
Ranipet holds the credit of being the second largest leather industrial estate in India. More than 60% of Asia’s leather production comes from Ranipet and it is the second largest foreign exchange earner in Tamil Nadu.
