Aappudaiyaar Kovil is a Shivasthalam located at
Madurai,
Tamil Nadu. The temple is 1.5 km north of Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple. The presiding deity here is Rishabeswarar. There is a separate worship place for Goddess Kuravankamazhum Kuzhalammai. The temple theertham is Rishaba
teertham. According to a legend, a
Pandya ruler worshipped a wedge (Aappu) considering it a
Shivlinga and it transformed miraculously into a Shivlinga later. Thus the temple got its name Aappudaiyaar. The specialty of this temple is that on the Panguni Uththiram day the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar visit here from the Madurai Temple. Sage Sambandar is said to have glorified this temple through his pathigams. The main festivals celebrated here are the
Brahmotsavam in the month of Maasi (February-March) and the
Navratri.
