Kaliyar Temple

Kaliyar Koil

Kaliyar Koil is a highly revered shrine situated in Devakottai town of Sivagangai District. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva, known as ‘Kaleesar’.

The temple boasts a huge Rajagopuram. Shivaganga, Kali Teerth, Vishnu Teerth, Lakshmi Teerth, Digpalaka Teerth, Sudarsana Teerth and Rudra Teerth are the major teerths of the temple.

It is believed that Sage Agastya came to this place and took bath in the holy Teerth of Shivaganga, where he visualized the real form of Lord Shiva.

Indra Vizha Festival, celebrated here in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June), is attended by large number of people from far and near.

The town is on the railway line from Karaikudi to Rameshwaram and is 8 km from Sivagangai.
