The beautiful Attappady with a unique blend of mountains, rivers and forests, is situated on the north-eastern side of the
Palakkad District. Covering an area of 827 sq km, this region has the largest tribal settlement, comprising mainly the
irulas and
mudugas. Attappady is mostly hilly highland terrain, fed by the tributaries of the
River Cauvery.
The Malleshwaram peak is worshipped as a gigantic Shivling by the tribals, who also celebrate the Shivratri festival with great passion.
Attappady is an area classified as the first Integrated Tribal Development Block of Kerala and forms part of Mannarkkad taluk. Attappady is bounded by Nilgiris in the north, Coimbatore in the east, Palakkad in the south and Malappuram District in the west.
Silent Valley National Park, Malleshwaram peak and Siruvani Drinking Water Reservoir here are perennial tourist attractions. A PWD rest house and a few private hotels provide accommodation at Agali.
The district headquarters Palakkad is 75 km from here. The nearest railway station is at Coimbatore. The Mannarkkad – Chinnathadagam Road passes through Attappady.
