Gurumurthy Temple, at
Omampuliyur, is dedicated to
Lord Dakshinamurthy and is also one of the five Puliyurs associated with Vyagrapadar.
Legend has it that, Goddess Pushpathalambigai (Parvati) prayed Lord Shiva to teach her
Pranava Mantram. It is said that Shiva assumed the form of Lord Dakshinamurthy and revealed the Pranava Mantram to her here.
According to another legend, a hunter when pursued by a tiger climbed a vilva tree located here and attained salvation. Vyagrapadar (the saint with tiger's claws and feet) is said to have worshipped here.
The temple has inscriptions that belong to Pallava Period. The inscriptions explain the donations made by Kopperunchingan. There are images, which describe the 'Stalapuranam' (origin) of this temple and an image of Nataraja which is carved out of stone.
Festivals celebrated here are Thaipusam, Maasi Magam, Navratri and Shivratri.
