Tirukkachur is a village in
Kanchipuram District.
Legend has it that, in order to secure nectar, the Devas and Asuras churned the sea of milk with Mantramalai as the churner and Vasuki as the rope. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a tortoise and prayed to Lord Shiva to give enough strength to prevent the submergence of the Malai (mountain). Kacham means tortoise and hence the place is called Tirukkachur.
As the Sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is Aal Maram (banyan tree), the place is referred to as Tirukkachur Aalakoil. Tirukkachur has two temples — one in the middle of the village called Virunditta Vradar Temple, and another, a km away in the west, on top of a hillock.
The nearest railway station, Singaperumal Koil station on the Chennai-Chengalpattu section, is 3 km away.
