Erode District




Erode District is situated on the bank of river Cauvery. It is bounded by Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts. Erode has an area of 8,169 sq km. It was part of the former Kongunadu region of ancient Madras state. Erode District has a hot and dry climate. It receives an annual rainfall of over 100 mm.

The major rivers are Bhavani, Cauvery, Amaravathi and Noyyal. Turmeric farming and processing, preparation of bread and coach body building are the major occupations. Erode District is well known for powerloom textile industry. The other major industries are cotton textiles, vanaspathy manufacturing and screen printing.

The main tourist centers are Bhavani Sangameshwarar Temple, Bannari Amman Temple, Bhavanisagar Dam, Kodiveri Dam, Birds Sanctuary at Vellode, Periyar Memorial House and Hill temples of Lord Muruga on Sivanmalai, Chennimalai, Thindalmalai and Vattamalai.
