Arthamaneshwarar Temple, an old Shiva temple of unknown date, is located near
Segal village in
Nagapattinam District and is 4 km off the Tirutturaipundi-Vedaranyam main road.
Legends has it that, during a quarrel between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Shiva cursed the goddess, who descended to the earth and performed penance to get absolution from the curse. Segal is the place where she meditated and it is said that Shiva was pleased by her penance and reunited her.
The main deity Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shivling. The temple also has idols of Amba, Lord Vishnu and Lord Muruga with Valli and Devyani. The temple is adorned with a rajagopuram, which now stands in a ruined condition. The temple has many inscriptions that date back to centuries.
