Pazhamuthircholai Murugan Temple is at Pazhamuthircholai near
Madurai in
Tamil Nadu. The main deity of this temple is
Lord Subramanya. Compared to other well known temples, the holy place at Pazhamuthir Cholai is small. The river Silambar runs nearby the temple, imparting an atmosphere of serenity and solitude.
Pazhamuthircholai is the sixth of the 'Aaru Paadai Veedu' or one of the six most important places of Muruga worship in India. Muruga is worshipped here with his consorts, Valli as Iccha Shakti, Devayani as Kriya Shakti, and Lord Muruga himself as Gnana Shakti.
The pilgrims going to Pazhamuthircholai take a dip in a small, sacred spring which runs by the Rakkayi Amman temple nearby.
It is here that Muruga, in the guise of a small boy put to test Avvaiyar, the well known saint. The Nelli tree, beneath which this took place, is worshipped even today.
One of the 108 most sacred Vishnu temples, Azhagar Koil, is situated at the base of the hill.
