Tsomgo Lake is situated at an altitude of 12,000 ft on the Gangtok Nathu La Highway, around 40 km away from
Gangtok, the capital of
Sikkim. Considered sacred by the local people, it is 1 km long, oval in shape and 15 meter deep. Special permission is required for the foreigners to visit this place.
The lake remains frozen during the winter months up to mid-May. It is home to Brahmini ducks,
red panda and various species of birds. Between May and August, visitors can see a variety of flowers in blooms, including the rhododendrons and various species of primulas. A small temple of
Lord Shiva is also present on the lakeside.
