Rumtek is a situated about 24 km south-west of
Gangtok in
East Sikkim District of
Sikkim. It is situated at an elevation of about 5800 ft above sea level.
Rumtek is famous for being home to the Rumtek Monastery, the largest monastery in Sikkim and the seat of Kagyu Order (one of the orders of Tibetan Buddhism) in India. The gompa is built similar to the original Kagyu Order monastery in Tibet with beautiful murals and religious artifacts.
The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, about 124 away. Siliguri Town Railway Station is 114 km from Gangtok. Regular buses connect Gangtok with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri.
