Kalimpong

Kalimpong is a bustling hill town situated at an altitude of 1250 m, at the foothills of Himalayas in West Bengal. The place is famous for its monasteries, churches and the beautiful views of the Himalayas. The region was a part of Bhutan before the British wrested control of the town. After Independence, it became a part of the state of West Bengal. Kalimpong is 50 km east of Darjeeling.

The trip from Darjeeling to Kalimpong is awe-inspiring and passes through lush green forests and tea gardens. On the way, one can stop at the '7th Mile View Point' from where one could catch the panoramic view of Teesta Ranjeet valley. Other places of tourist interest include Tharpa Choling monastery, Thongsa gumpa, Durpin Dara, Zong Dong Palri Fo-Brang Monastery, Mangal Dham, Kalibari and Lava.

Kalimpong is also renowned for its orchids, tapestry bags and purses, copperware and scrolls. Tibetan Jewelry and art effects can be purchased from the shops along the streets to the east of Dambar Chowk.

The market area (10th Mile) and the area around the Motor Stand have some budget hotels. Since there is an acute shortage for water in the town, few of the lower-end hotels have running water. Best restaurants of the town are in the hotels: Kalimpong Park and Crown and China Garden. Gompu’s bar and the Glenary’s – famous for its pastries are other descent eateries.

Nearest airport is Bagdogra (80 km). Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (77 km) are the closest railheads. By road, Kalimpong is connected with Darjeeling, Siliguri and Gangtok.
