Situated in
North Sikkim District, Labrang Monastery is around 4 km from
Phodong Monastery. The word Labrang literally means "the dwelling place of lamas". It follows the Nyingmapa order and is commissioned in 1814 by Gyalshe Rigzing Chempa. With its unique architecture, this old structure is one of the premier monasteries of
Sikkim. The southern, western and northern sides of the monastery are surrounded by dense forests. Just below the road between the Phodang and Labrang Monasteries are the ruins of
Tumlong, the third capital of Sikkim.
