Yuksom, 32 km from
Pemayangtse, in
West Sikkim District, was the first capital of
Sikkim, where the first Chogyal (king) of Sikkim was consecrated in 1641 by three learned lamas. The evidence of the sacred ceremony is still intact at Norbugang Chorten in the form of stone seats and a foot print of the head Lama on a stone. This gateway to Shangri-La or Ney-Pemathang, lies at the base of high, forest-covered mountains and is a great trekking spot.
The place is the trailhead for all the treks into West Sikkim like
Dzongri and
Goechala. Dubdi Monastery, the second oldest monastery in Sikkim built around 1701, is a sacred place in the vicinity. Magnificent views of mini lakes against the Himalayan backdrop can be had from here. Pemayangtse is about 32 km north and Tsokha is 12 km away. Facilities for accommodations are available.
Civil Enclave Bagdogra is the nearest airfield and
Jalpaiguri Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
