Puja is the act of showing reverence to the deities of the Hindu religion through chanting, prayers, daily offerings - flowers, fruit, cooked rice, leaves, sweetmeats, butter, sugar and water - and rituals. During pujas an idol or other symbol of the deity acts as a spiritual connection with the God. Offerings are made to the
God of fire. According to the Hindu belief any offer to Agni, the god of fire, is an offer to the supreme God.
Pujas are conducted in temples, homes as well as outdoor public spaces. During the puja the idol is symbolically bathed, clothed in new garments and decorated with ornaments and garlands. Incense is burned and aarti is performed.
