Built high on the hills west of
Chittorgarh in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha, the most spectacular Kumbhalgarh Fort is situated 80 km north-west of
Udaipur. It is one of the great forts of
Rajasthan. As it is located in a strategic place, the fort is called ‘the eye of Mewar’. Designed in accordance with the ancient Hindu Vastu Sashtra, the fort has ramparts with massive walls, rounded bastions, tall watchtowers and secret passages. The outer wall surrounds an area of 32 square mile and the fort is said to have once contained 252 palaces.
The nearest major railway station is at Udaipur and the Udaipur Airport is 110 km from Kumbhalgarh.
