A distinguished and internationally acclaimed
tabla player, Zakir Hussain was born in
Mumbai on 9 March, 1951. He took his lessons from his father and famous tabla player, Ustad Allah Rakha. In 1987, he made his debut solo release which was an East-West fusion. To his credit are a large number of albums. Zakir Hussain has worked with renowned musicians such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, George Harrison, Van Morrison and Joe Henderson. He set to tune the opening music for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. A few of the honors bestowed on Zakir Hussain are Padmashree, the Indo-American Award and the
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He has also composed music for a number of movies.
