Dungarpur District is nestled in the foothills of the
Aravallis. It is bounded by
Udaipur in the north,
Banswara District in the east and the state of
Gujarat in the south and west. The district has a total area of 3,770 sq km with a population of over 1 million.
Dungarpur has dry nature with hot season, milder than in the desert regions of Rajasthan. The average rainfall is 710 mm. It has an abundant collection of teak, mahua, mango and khajur trees. Major crops are bajra, jowar, maize, wheat, barley, pulses and groundnut.
The prime attractions are Gaib Sagar Lake, Government Archaeological Museum, Juna Mahal, Udai Bilas palace, Dungarpur Teerth, Galiyakot, Baneshwar, Baroda, Bhuvaneshwar, Deo Somnath, and Poonjpur. Fairs and festivals such as Holi, Baneshwar fair, and Bar Bij fair are celebrated. All these fairs are the venues of traditional dance, songs, and acrobatic displays.
