In Jainism a Tirthankar is a liberated soul who has attained omniscience and guides the souls to save them from the cycles of repeated earth existences (rebirth). The word Tirthankar means one who establishes the four fold order (monk, nun, layman, and laywoman) of religion. Tirthankars are also called Jina (vanquisher, victor, and conqueror)or Arihants. Their followers are Jains. For Jains, a Tirthankar is greater than the gods because he transcends the laws of space and time.
Adinatha was the first Tirthankar, and Mahavir was the last Tirthankar.
