Banswara District is located in the southern-most part of
Rajasthan. It is surrounded by
Dungarpur in the west,
Udaipur and
Chittorgarh in the north, and
Ratlam and
Jhabua districts of
Madhya Pradesh in the east and south respectively. It has a total area of 5,000 sq km, and the population is over 1 million.
Banswara is the district headquarters. The prominent languages spoken are
Rajasthani and
Hindi.
Banswara has a moderate climate. The annual rainfall is 92 cm. There are scattered ranges of Aravallis in the eastern half with teak forests on the slopes. Mango, Khajur, and Mahua trees are also grown. Major crops are maize, wheat, sugarcane, gram, paddy, barley, jowar, groundnut, and sesamum.
The nearest airport is at Udaipur. The important places to visit are Arthuna and Jain temples dating back to the 11th, 12th and 15th centuries, Mahi Dam, Parahera, the historic city of
Talwara with ruins of ancient monuments, the ancient temple of the goddess Tripura Sundari, Sri Raj Mandir palace, Anand Sagar Lake, Dialab Lake, Madareshwar, and Abdulla Pir.
Holi, Deevo, Ami Egyaras, Ghotia Amba fair and fair at Mangarh are the main fairs and festivals.
