Barmer, the seat of administration of
Barmer District, is a traditional desert town perched on a rocky hill, exuding the color, warmth and hospitality of rural
Rajasthan. Once on the ancient camel trade route, the town is now the center for carved wooden furniture, pottery, carpets, intricate embroidery work, block printed fabrics and multi-hued traditional costumes. Barmer is 220 km west of
Jodhpur.
Places of tourist interest in and around the city include a temple dedicated to Lord Surya and the ancient ruins of Juna Barmer. The three Jain temples, an inscription of 1295 and a huge pillar in the hall of the largest temple of Maharaja Kula Sri Samanta Sinha Deva - a ruler of Bahadmera (earlier name of Barmer) are also worth a visit.
The Tilwara Cattle Fair, held in the nearby village of Tilwara, attracts large number of people from far and near.
Jodhpur Airport is about 222 km from Barmer. Barmer Railway Station is on the Munabao-Jodhpur line. The
National Highway 15 passes through Barmer and is well connected to Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer and Ahmedabad.
