Dhaulpur is a historic city situated near the
Chambal River, 113 km from
Bharatpur, in
Rajasthan. Dhaulpur was founded by Dhawal Deo at a site little south of its present location.
Agra is 60 km north of Dhaulpur.
Owing to its strategic location on the main route from Kabul and Delhi to Deccan and its proximity to cities like Gwalior and Bayana, the city was invaded frequently by the rulers of Delhi and Agra. There was a large scale plundering and devastation during the invasion of Sikander Lodhi in 1501. Babur conquered Dhaulpur in 1526. It was during the reign of Humayun that the site of the city was moved eastwards, inorder to escape the erosion by Chambal River.
Places of tourist interest in the town include Shergarh Fort, Khanpur Mahal, Machchhkund (8 km) and an ancient Shiva temple on the Gwalior-Agra road. Van Vihar wildlife sanctuary (18 km) and Ramsagar Sanctuary (36 km) constitute interesting excursions outside the town.
Nearest airport is at Agra.
Dhaulpur Railway Station is on the Gwalior-Agra line. There are regular trains connecting the city with
New Delhi, which is 230 km away. The
National Highway 3 passes through Dhaulpur.
