Ropar Wetland is spread over
Rupnagar and
Nawan Shehar districts of
Punjab and is near to
Rupnagar.
Located in the lap of Shivalik foothills, it was formed in 1952 during the construction of a barrage for diversion of water from the Sutlej River for drinking and irrigation supplies. It is a human-modified wetland with a permanent artificial lake and a permanent river. The area along the river and reservoir comprises a patch of forest, a marshy zone and cultivated land.
The wetland provides habitat to the endangered turtle 'chitra indica,' the threatened snake 'python molurus' and the otter 'Lutrogale perspicillata.' The site is also an important staging ground for migratory water birds.
The site attracts nature lovers and birdwatchers throughout the year in considerable numbers. The water body is also excellent for boating, and long distance swimming.
