Punjabi




Punjabi belongs to the family of Indo-Aryan languages. Natives of the region of Punjab (both in India and Pakistan) use it as their mother tongue. The religious text of the Sikhs, the Adi Granth, was written in Punjabi. Bhangra is a very popular Punjabi folk-dance performed on almost all ceremonial occasions. This lively form has its peculiar music called Bhangra music that uses Punjabi for its lyrics. Punjabi includes a number of words from Arabic, Persian and Turkish.

Punjabi uses different scripts which depend on the region and dialect spoken. Bulleh Shah, Hashim, Sultan Bahu, Shiv Kumar Batalvi and Amrita Pritam are a few of the authors of renown in Punjabi.
