Bhangra is the most favorite dance form in
Punjab. It is a dance of physical and mental endurance, and is considered as the king of dances. The dance is mainly performed during the period of
Baisakhi, when the harvesting is finished.
The dance is accompanied of Bhangra Dhol and rhythmic clapping. There is a main drummer who stands at the center. The speed of the dance increases gradually with the beats of the drum. Usually the dancers hop on one leg, raise their hands, and clap with their handkerchiefs.
The Bhangra dancer’s costumes are usually colorful with colored Patka on the head, a lacha or lungi of the same color, a long tunic and a black or blue waistcoat and ghunghroos on the ankles. Tiny bells are sometimes tied over the ankles. Small rings are also worn by some of the dancers. A bright strip over the turban is often regarded as a must.
