Ferozepur

Ferozepur, the seat of administration of Ferozepur District, is an ancient city located near Indo-Pak border, in north-west Punjab. In normal times, the city is a major center of trade between the two countries. Ferozepur is 170 km west of Ludhiana and is around 10 km from the international border with Pakistan.

Ferozepur derives its name after Ferozeshah Tughlaq, who is thought to have founded the city in the 14th century. Its origin has been also attributed to one of the Bhatti Chiefs named Feroze Khan, but the former version is widely accepted.

Owing to Ferozepur’s strategic location in the north-west, the region had been part of many a military expedition that took place in the area in the past. The city was directly or indirectly associated with the Anglo-Sikh war of 1845 and the Anglo-Afghan war of 1838.

A number of holy shrines, historic places and memorials dots the landscape of Ferozepur. Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial, Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara, Jain Swetamber Temple and the Anglo-Sikh War Memorial are some spots worth visiting.

Nearest international airport is at Amritsar. Ferozepur Cantonment Railway Station is a prominent railhead of Punjab.
