Yanam District




The district of Yanam, part of the union territory of Pondicherry, is situated on the east coast of the Indian Peninsula. It is bounded on all sides by the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. The town of Yanam lies on the spot where the river Coringa branches off from the river Gauthami into two parts. Yanam, covering an area of 30 sq km, has a population of over 31,000. The climate is tropical in nature with hot summers and moderate winters.

Yanam has a mixture of French and Dravidian cultures. The main languages are Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. The major tourist destinations are the Sri Vishnu temple, Pillaraya temple and Shri Venkateswara Temple. There is no rail link and the nearest railhead is at Kakinada. Yanam is connected by road with towns such as Kakinada, Rajamundri and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The nearest international airports are at Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) and Chennai ( Tamil Nadu). Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada are the nearest domestic airports.
