Ekadasi is a sacred day for the Hindus in India, which is spent in fasting, meditation and prayer. Ekadasi occurs twice a month, on the eleventh day of a lunar month. This observance is mainly related to the worship of Lord
Vishnu. This is a religious system of controlling and cleansing the different body systems and is related to the planetary influence on human beings.
Certain Ekadasis in a year are special to various temples in India. During this time, numerous devotees attend the devotional services at the temples and make offerings, especially of flowers and tulsi leaves. The breaking of fast on the subsequent day, Dvadasi, is also ceremonial.
