Located in
Sambalpur District, Bikramkhol is a cave containing pictographic inscriptions of antiquity. They were found in a natural rock-shelter, six feet below the top. The inscribed portion bears some partly cut and partly painted letters.
The method of incision is believed to be of the Brahmi period and the inscriptions were found to be a mixture of Brahmi forms and a developed type of the Mohenjedaro script. The writings were done with red- ochre paint, the type found in many pre-historic and historic caves and cave-buildings in India. The replica of these inscriptions can be seen at the Orissa State Museum, Bhubaneswar.
Bikramkhol is 88 km from Sambalpur. The nearest railway station is Jharsuguda Junction Railway Station, 26 km west.
