Angul District

Located in central Orissa, Angul is spread over 6,347 sq km, and accommodates a population of more than a million. Clothed in lush green forests, it is rich in wildlife. Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of the region.

Angul has an abundant stock of manpower and raw materials and is one of the top revenue-generating districts in Orissa, owing to the vast coal mines located in the region. It is home to big industries such as National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Mahanadi Coal Field Limited (MCF), Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCI), and Talcher Thermal Power Station (TTPS).

The Mahanadi River passes through Angul District forming a 22 km long narrow gorge known as Satkosia. It is an ideal habitat for crocodiles. Tourist attractions are Tikarpada, Darjan Falls, Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary, Kapilas Hills, the boulders in Talcher, and the Talcher Palace. Angul is also famous for the Budhi Thakurani, Sri Saila Khetra, and the traditional puppet dance. The climate is sub tropical with 170 cm of rainfall. Oriya, Hindi, English and tribal dialects are widely used in the region.
