Longkhum is a beautiful village located 17 km south-west of
Mokokchung, in
Nagaland. This legendary village, surrounded by hills and valleys, is situated at an altitude of 1846 m above sea level. It was notorious for head-hunting in the state.
Longkhum is renowned for its exquisite handicraft and handloom items. The magnificent views of the eastern Himalayas and Assam valley will be a memorable experience for any nature loving tourist.
Major tourist attractions include the Mata Yimkong - the top of the hillock where once stood a fortress and the students' Jubilee Tower, the highest point of the village. The footprints preserved on a rock surface, believed to be of China and Tibetan – the Romeo and Juliet of the Ao Naga tribe, is another interesting spot worth visiting.
Longkhum celebrates most of the Ao tribe festivals including the Tsungremmong (on the first week of August) and Moatsu Mong (in early May).
The nearest airport is at Dimapur (200 km). Mokokchung is linked with Kohima (160 km),
Jorhat (105 km) and Dimapur. Mariani Junction Railway Station in Assam is the closest railway station.
