Kohima District is situated at an altitude of 1,400 m above sea level, and lies north of the Japfu Barail intersection. It is bounded by the state of
Assam in the west,
Wokha District in the north,
Zunheboto and
Phek districts in the east and the state of
Manipur in the south. The total area of the district is 1,035 sq km, and population is 314,400. It receives an average annual rainfall of 2000 mm.
Kohima District occupies a prominent place in the history of
Nagaland. It was here Netaji Subhash chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fouj started its struggle for freedom with the help of Nagas. The inhabitants of the district are
Angami, Rengma and
Zeliangrong communities. They are Christians and speak
Nagamese. The important festivals celebrated are Hega,
Chega Gadi and Ngada. The major attractions are the picturesque Kohima War Cemetery, Nagaland State Museum and Catholic Cathedral at Aradurah Hill.
